Therapist Entrepreneur, Not a Side Hustler

Written by Ami Jones, Founder of Therapists Staff Room and MBACP, BPC Reg. Psychodynamic Counsellor

In the realm of mental health, we are familiar with the terms "counsellor," "psychotherapist," and "counselling psychologist." While these professionals' terms are predominantly recognised for their expertise in talking therapies, for nearly half* of them, there's a lesser-known aspect of their careers that deserves spotlighting, their entrepreneurial spirit

The traditional view of a therapist for our clients might conjure images of someone who sits in a cozy room, listening empathetically to clients. This is how it should be for the people we support as therapists, however, many practitioners are much more than just this; they are multifaceted entrepreneurs who contribute significantly to the mental health field and the communities they serve.

Beyond Therapy: The Entrepreneurial Role of The Therapist

*According to a study by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) 48% of members do not rely on counselling as their main source of income and they have two or more roles ( Therapy Today, March 2017: Volume 28, Issue 2). This statistic highlights the fact that many therapists are not merely side hustlers: They are entrepreneurs, perhaps in their counselling practice and maybe outside it and they juggle multiple roles and responsibilities.

These professionals often extend their expertise beyond the therapy room by engaging in a variety of entrepreneurial activities. Here are a few examples:

1. Writing Articles and Books: Many therapists share their knowledge and insights through articles, blogs, and books. By doing so, they not only contribute to the broader conversation about mental health but also establish themselves as thought leaders in their field. This dissemination of knowledge helps to demystify mental health issues and encourages others to seek help.

2. Supervision and Training: A significant number of therapists train and take on supervisory roles, supporting other professionals in the field. Engaging in Supervision is of course, a requirement for therapists, as is attending a number of CPD hours, but it is those who train and supervise who can help to elevate the standards of practice. By sharing their experiences and expertise, they contribute to the growth and development of future generations of mental health professionals.

3. Renting Therapy Rooms: Some therapists establish their own practices, which involves not just therapy but also the business of renting therapy rooms. This entrepreneurial venture requires an understanding of marketing and finance —skills that are essential for running a successful business.

4. Managing Successful Businesses: Beyond individual practices, some therapists expand their reach by running larger organisations, offering support to other practitioners with their marketing and skills in managing a private practice and leading community programs. With a strong entrepreneurial mindset, they develop innovative services that meet the diverse needs of their clients.

The Value of Entrepreneurial Therapists

The entrepreneurial nature of therapists adds immense value to the mental health field. They bring creativity, innovation, and a business-savvy approach to their work, enhancing the services they provide. This entrepreneurial spirit allows them to adapt to changing client needs, explore new therapeutic approaches, and create a more accessible mental health landscape.

Moreover, as entrepreneurs and practitioners, therapists often prioritise continuous professional development, staying updated on the latest research and trends in mental health. This commitment to growth not only benefits their careers but also enriches the therapeutic experience for their clients.

In conclusion, therapists are not just side hustlers; they are dedicated entrepreneurs who are making significant contributions to mental health. By recognising and supporting their multifaceted roles, we can begin to appreciate the depth of their expertise and the impact they have on individuals and communities alike. We hope Therapists’ Staff Room and our Community Directory will aid in this endeavour: By providing a platform where we can truly showcase our capabilities and come together as a community. If you have something to offer to your peers in the Staff Room, you can create your listing here and share your services and knowledge with the Community.
